About Pullman Yards
Pullman Yards is a former industrial site thoughtfully restored and reimagined as a destination for events, arts, and cultural experiences.
From Rail Yard To Cultural Landmark
Before Pullman Yards became a destination for events, film, food, and community, the 27-acre site played a major role in Atlanta’s industrial and rail history.
The original Kirkwood shops
Early industrial beginnings
1904
Pratt Engineering
The site began in 1904 when Pratt Engineering Company purchased what was then farmland in Kirkwood to build a sugar and fertilizer processing plant. Long before it became known as Pullman Yards, the property was part of Atlanta’s growing eastside industrial landscape.

Adapted for wartime use
1917
World War I
During World War I, the complex was used in the production of fertilizer bombs, adding another layer to the property’s early manufacturing history. This period reflects how the site adapted to national production needs before its later rail identity took shape.

Around this same early era, Pratt Engineering also developed and patented liquid carbonated gas technology, which was later purchased by The Coca-Cola Company while it was still a startup.

Rail history takes shape
1926
The Pullman Company
In 1926, The Pullman Company purchased the property and renovated it for the manufacturing and repair of railroad sleeper cars. This era gave the site the Pullman name and established the rail-yard identity that still defines it today.

1955
Southern Iron & Equipment
Southern Iron & Equipment Company purchased the yard in 1955 and continued the site’s railcar manufacturing and repair work. The property remained a working industrial complex, carrying forward the hands-on fabrication and rail-service legacy of the Pullman era.

Historic character remains
2001–2009
Preservation and recognition
By the early 2000s, the site’s historic significance was increasingly recognized. Pratt-Pullman District was placed on the Atlanta Preservation Center’s endangered places list in 2001, and in 2009 it became a contributing property to the Kirkwood Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Transition from dormant industrial site to adaptive reuse
2017
A new chapter begins
In 2017, Atomic Entertainment purchased the complex with plans for redevelopment. That same year, Atlanta’s Urban Design Commission nominated the historic site as a landmark site, marking a transition from dormant industrial property toward adaptive reuse.
